Colourful Kitchen Designs You Need to See

I have to admit something. I am so sick of white kitchens. Like, don’t get me wrong, white kitchens can be nice and all, in fact, they can be beautiful. But I’m just so sick of everyone and their mother remodelling their kitchen to be all white. Why are so many people afraid of colour? Where is the personality?! Where is the creativity?! Please, allow me to introduce you to some lovely colourful kitchens.

You might know, I started my career as a kitchen designer. I was exclusively designing kitchens for a couple of years. I loved when clients were experimental with their kitchens and not afraid to really do something different with their design choices. Kitchens are so fun to design because there are so many elements. The kitchen is really and truly the heart of the home. Get your kitchen in order and you’ll get your life in order. Or whatever Jordan Peterson said.

I want to inspire people to get out of their interior design comfort zone and perhaps infuse some colour into their kitchen…so here are some colourful kitchens I love.

Blue and honey-oak kitchen

This kitchen really caught my eye. I love the solid blue backsplash, it’s perfect with the warm honey-oak cabinets. I think a lot of people are turned off from warm honey-oak coloured kitchen cabinets…because of the late 90s/ early 2000s builder honey-oak cabinets…I will insert a photo in case if you need a reminder.

You’re probably looking at this photo like “yikes, give me a white kitchen please!”. I promise you, you can give your honey-oak kitchen cabinets a refreshed look without painting them all white.

When it comes to design, it’s all about how the elements come together as a whole. Interior design is kind of like putting together an outfit. You may show me some really funky colourful shoes. And I’m not too experimental with my outfits so I may be hesitant to even try to style them. But, once I see the whole outfit together, it may change my perspective on the funky colourful shoes. They don’t look so crazy with a little black dress, the elements balance each other out and work.

Multi-coloured kitchen

Here is another kitchen that I love that also has honey-oak cabinets. But as you can see this colourful kitchen also has some blue and red! Wow! I love how homey this kitchen feels. It somehow feels inspired by the Mediterranean to me. Maybe that’s why it feels so homey to me. It feels like a kitchen I’d like to make a lemon tart in or something. There is something so dreamy and ethereal about this kitchen. You just cannot get charm like this without infusing a space with colour.

Green kitchen

This green kitchen is just absolutely lovely. Green is one of my favourite colours to add to interiors and especially kitchens. There’s something so sophisticated about dark green. It’s a great option as it looks good with so many colours and finishes. Green is a colour that can never go in or out of trend in my opinion. Any colour found in nature is a classic colour.

Black kitchen

Now, when I said colourful kitchen probably didn’t imagine black. But here it is. This kitchen has got some balls. An all-black kitchen with an orange and red floor? Props to this designer, cause even I’d be nervous. In the end, it really turned out super cool.

Magenta kitchen

Now, when I tell you when I saw this kitchen it was love at first sight, I am not lying. I am absolutely head over heels for this magenta kitchen. I think magenta is the most underrated colour used in interior design. Magenta is not as bold as a straight-up red, so it won’t smack you in the face and wake you up, but it adds enough vibrance into a space to make you feel inspired and alive. In fact, I dream of a magenta bathroom. I’m drooling over the thought of it (yes, I’m a freak). I hope my magenta interior dreams come true soon.

Here is another kitchen with a magenta kitchen. To die for!

If you’re not ready to commit to a colourful kitchen…

Well, if you’re too scared to fully jump into the world of colour. What you can do is add a little sprinkle of colour into your kitchen. A hot trend for years now is to design kitchens with 2-toned cabinetry. Selecting an alternate colour for your kitchen island or lower cabinets might be more in line with your design taste.

Take a look at my client’s kitchen from a recent project I completed. We wanted to go bold but my clients’ were not quite convinced to do an all-blue kitchen.

Instead, I eased them into colour with this bold and daring backsplash. I also incorporated a bold blue for the island. I selected Hudson Bay by Benjamin Moore. This kitchen certainly has the wow factor without being so colourful. A nice hint of colour created contrast and interest in this kitchen. The bold blue-black backsplash really brings the drama and moody-ness to this kitchen. Without these elements this kitchen would have been another basic off-white kitchen, blah.

The kitchen of your dreams is outside your comfort zone

I love pushing the boundaries in interior design, that’s really where the magic happens. Interior design is really kind of an experiment sometimes. Sometimes it’s kind of scary. The blue-black backsplash with a gold pattern was a bit of a gamble. But, it is my job to gamble and my clients’ job to trust the process and have faith in me. In the end, it all comes together somehow and in some way. That is the magic of interior design.

So, you can play it safe with another white kitchen, or you can roll the dice and pick a colour that really makes an impact.

Let’s design your space together, virtually.
