The Top Interior Design Trends in 2023
Sooo, it’s the new year and you know what that means… everyone wants to lose 10 pounds…well, that’s true but this is my interior design blog so that is not the topic of discussion today. The new year in the interior design industry means new products, fads, interior design trends and innovation. How exciting!!!
Now, what exactly is an interior design trend versus an interior design fad?
Well, I think plenty of people get confused between a trend and a fad. Trends tend to last around ten years. As we saw in the past, from 2010-2020 grey and super modern were all the rage (wasn’t my favourite design period to be honest). From 2020 on wards a new trend cycle has started. So what’s the new trend in interior design you ask?
If I could describe it in 2 words it would be; clean organic. These 2 words could also describe my new diet plan for 2023.
What does clean organic mean exactly when it comes to interior design?
Organic shapes, earth tones, warm colours, woods….and yes, the 70s are back baby!!! (The 70s were before my time, so it’s new to me).
Now, this is a trend cycle I actually am enjoying.
A fad is something that comes into style and goes out quickly. Nowadays, with the internet and the fast pace world we live in, fads are gone so quickly that it’s almost hard to catch onto them, they typically lose popularity within a couple of months. So when it comes to interior design fads, I stay away from them completely considering I don’t want to be changing my decor 3 times a year… think about those DYI plaster mirrors we were seeing on TikTok last year… that fad came and went!
So anyway, back to the topic of interior design trends of 2023.
Here is a list of the top interior design trends of the year from an interior designer’s perspective…
Organic Shaped Furniture
In the last trend cycle, we saw super boxy furniture with nothing but sharp edges….
Now, we are seeing smooth lines, unique shapes and curves. Whew, I love me some curves. Who’s with me? The new furniture designs we are seeing are inspired by nature and really are stand-out pieces. Rounded, curved, organically shaped furniture really brings such a softness to any space. There is something so romantic and delicate about these furniture pieces….I absolutely love this trend as it’s really feminine and allows for an unusual piece of furniture.
Wood Panelling
Another huge interior design trend I am seeing for this year is wood panelling! And no.. not like the kind in your grandmother’s basement. Nowadays, there is an amazing variety and options for super cool wood panelling that can be modern looking, transitional or traditional (whatever floats your boat). It’s a really easy way to create a feature wall and add some warmth to any space with a lovely wood tone. I told you the 70s are back and you can really see that it is no lie in this interior design trend.
Statement Doors
While visiting IDS Toronto this year I was surprised to see how many funky doors I came across. This trend seems to be just emerging and it’s pretty exciting to see all the new door designs that are making their way onto the interior design scene. I love a bold, beautiful front door… there is no way for your house to make a better first impression than with a dramatic front door.
Warm Colours
Warm-toned colours are back and they’re here to stay (unless for some reason the gosh awful grey interior design trend comes back). Think of; terracotta, beige, brown, nude…. Mmmmm. Don’t get me wrong, there are still cool-toned colours that are on trend such as green but for the most part, the colour palettes we are seeing trending are warm-toned. The perfect terracotta red? I’d pick Benjamin Moore’s Boxcar Red CC-122 and the perfect on-trend green? I’d pick Benjamin Moore’s Salisbury Green HC-139
Nature Inspired Accessories
Yes, the latest interior design trend is inspired by the Flinstones! Hahah, not, but it kinda seems like it. We are seeing a lot of natural, nature-inspired items hit the retail scene. Accessories that look like stones, coral and plants have really begun to make their mark as a new interior design trend in 2023. This really solidifies the clean organic theme interior design trend for the next decade… it’s all about bringing the inside in and I’m not mad at it. This trend really feels “spa-like” to me. Crystals, stones and plants create a relaxing environment that clams the spirit and mind. This is a trend that is worth pursuing in my books.
Mosaic Rectangular Tiles
Another huge interior design trend I have been noticing that is emerging this year is mosaic rectangular-shaped tiles. These tiles come in a ton of different colours and I am loving them!! I am seeing this trend especially used for kitchen backsplashes and I predict this will become the new white subway tile (well, that’s what I hope because I’m so tired of plain white subway tiles!!). These tiles are absolutely gorgeous and I can see them being stunning for applications such as; fireplaces, bathrooms and accent walls.
Vintage furniture and Decor
Now, this has got to be my favourite interior design trend for 2023! And I may be pushing my own agenda here… but I am seeing plenty of designers and consumers shop second-hand and vintage for their furniture and accessories. The “grandmillennial” aesthetic strongly emerged last year, which is an interior design style created by mixing in the old and new to create a look that blurs the lines between millenniums and truly creates a unique and timeless space. I love shopping vintage because I can find rare and unique pieces that really add so much character that can only be achieved with vintage goods.
