Can You Really Trust AI To Design Your Home?

AI to design isn’t new to me. As a designer who has become a voice for AI in the interior design industry—writing countless blog posts such as, I Tested The Best AI Interior Design Phone App and, The Best and Worst Interior Design AI,A Designer’s Review being featured in Realtor.ca for my thoughts on AI for decorating interiors, and even being interviewed for a university study about AI and client–designer communication—I think I have some credibility when it comes to the big question: Can I trust AI to design my home?

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

Recently, I asked ChatGPT what people were searching for in the world of interior design, and one of the top trending questions was exactly this: “Can I trust AI to design my home?”

The irony of asking AI if you can trust AI isn’t lost on me.

So, let’s dive into the truth from a designer’s perspective.

A Designer’s Opinion on AI Tools

AI To Design

Before I give you a yes or no answer, let’s be real: in interior design, there’s almost never a clear “yes” or “no.”

It’s like when a client asks:
“Should I paint my kitchen white?”

My answer always depends on follow-up questions:

  • What mood do you want to create?
  • What’s happening in the adjoining rooms?
  • How does the natural light affect your space?
  • Is your dog trained?

Design is never one-size-fits-all, and it’s never as simple as you’d think.

What Can AI Design Tools Do?

AI To Design

If you’re looking for an AI to design your home, I’d recommend reading: The Best and Worst Interior Design AI,A Designer’s Review, I review the most popular AI tools all in one post, helping you to make an informed decision.

Anyhow, there are plenty of AI tools on the market that can help you design your home such as, Planner5D, HomeDesignsAI and Remodeled.AI.

These tools can:

  • Generate furniture layouts
  • Suggest colour palettes
  • Render photorealistic rooms
  • Help homeowners and designers brainstorm

Sounds amazing and easy, right? But here’s where the question of trust comes in.

Can You Trust AI to Design Your Home?

The truth: it’s less about whether you can trust AI and more about what you trust AI with.

For example, I use ChatGPT daily for brainstorming or writing, but I’m not about to trust it to file my taxes. Similarly, AI design tools are fantastic helpers—but they shouldn’t replace the human expertise of an interior designer.

In fact, I already put ChatGPT to the interior design test, read: Interior Designer Vs. ChatGPT: Who Can Space Plan Better

The Do’s of Using AI To Design Your Home

If you’re going to try AI home design apps, here’s what they’re great for:

✅ Designing simple or less personal spaces
Perfect for guest rooms, Airbnbs, or spaces that don’t require much personalization.

✅ Exploring different interior design styles
AI can help you visualize Scandinavian, Japandi, Mid-century modern, or eclectic looks before committing.

✅ Testing color palettes and finishes
Not sure if a green accent wall will work? Or whether dark cabinets will overwhelm your kitchen? AI can mock it up instantly. However, keep in mind, colors look different digitally.

✅ Speeding up workflow for professionals
If you’re an interior designer or work in the AEC industry, AI can cut rendering and floor plan creation time dramatically.

✅ Visualizing empty spaces
AI helps you picture how furniture will look in an empty room before making big purchases.

The Don’ts of Using AI for Interior Design

Here’s where AI tools fall short—and why you need to be careful:

❌ Don’t rely on AI for measurements
While some apps estimate room sizes, they’re not precise enough for real renovations. Always measure manually.

❌ Don’t copy AI designs exactly
AI-generated designs can look generic. Use them as inspiration, not a literal step-by-step plan.

❌ Don’t assume furniture proportions are accurate
AI often misrepresents sizing—leading to costly mistakes if you order based on the rendering.

❌ Don’t treat AI like an interior designer
AI doesn’t know how you live in your space, your habits, or your emotional needs. Human expertise still matters.

Why Clients Still Call Me After Using AI

Here’s something I find funny: many of my clients come to me after they’ve tried every AI design tool available.

And I always ask:
“If you already redesigned your home with AI, why hire me?”

Their answer?
“Because I need an expert I can trust.”

And that’s exactly the point. Renovations and furnishings are expensive. Trusting a $15/month app to guide your biggest investments feels risky. AI can spark ideas, but at the end of the day, people want human reassurance.

Final Thoughts: Should You Use AI?

I’m not against AI in design—in fact, I create a lot of content around it because I truly believe it has a place.

Here’s what I tell clients:

  • Use AI for inspiration, style discovery, and quick visualizations.
  • Don’t rely on AI for technical accuracy, sizing, or complex design decisions.
  • Pair AI with expert advice. Whether from a professional interior designer (hi, that’s me 👋) or through your own careful research, you’ll get better results when AI isn’t the only tool in play.

So… can you trust AI to design your home?
The answer: it depends.

Use it as a tool, not as the design bible. Combine AI with your own judgment—and, if possible, a professional’s guidance—to create a home that’s not only functional but also deeply personal.
