Exposing The Truth: How Much Do Interior Designers Really Charge?

How Much Do Interior Designers Charge? (What you need to know before hiring one). If you’ve stumbled upon this post, you’re probably considering hiring an interior designer and want to know: how much do interior designers charge? That’s a valid question. And as a designer who enjoys offering some honest insight into the interior design industry (in a tasteful way, of course), I’m here to answer it. So, keep reading for a full breakdown of how much interior designers charge and what you should know before reaching out to hire one.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

How Do Interior Designers Charge?

Well, the answer is: it depends. Interior designers charge in different ways, and understanding those pricing models will help you better navigate what works best for you and your project.

1. Charging by the Hour

The most common way interior designers charge is by the hour—and as a designer, I completely understand why.

Everyone loves a flat fee. Knowing exactly how much something will cost upfront is comforting. But in the world of remodels, renovations, and constantly shifting needs and budgets, interior design projects are rarely predictable.

This is exactly why many designers choose to charge hourly: it helps them protect against scope creep and adapt to a project’s ever-changing demands.

And as a client, I know that can feel a little nerve-wracking—but if you trust your designer, and they’re fair and transparent, this can be a flexible and honest way to work.

Funny thing—some of my own clients have told me:

“You know, you should really charge more…”

I actually gasped the first time someone said that. You want to pay me more?!

But yes, some clients do (and they even tip me).

One client explained, “I’ve had friends who worked with designers before, and they had terrible experiences. They were charged for every email and every phone call—even just checking in led to a $50 bill. You’re really fair. You don’t nickel-and-dime.”

I took that as a compliment, and honestly, I was shocked to hear some designers go that far.

So, let that be a reminder: what a designer charges for can vary widely.

The typical hourly range for interior designers is between $100–$375+ per hour, depending on their experience, location, and niche. Newer designers might charge less, while high-profile designers can charge much more. I suggest working with someone who is seasoned, transparent, and aligns with your budget.

2. Charging by Square Footage

Some designers charge based on the square footage of your space.

This pricing model can be helpful for estimating overall costs, but keep in mind—larger spaces aren’t always more complex than smaller ones. Still, it’s a model some designers use to simplify billing.

Rates per square foot vary widely, but you might expect somewhere between $8–$25 per square foot, depending on the designer and the level of service.

3. Charging by Room

Another common method is charging a flat rate per room.

In this case, a designer may provide a pricing guide that outlines costs by space—for example, a dining room might be $1,000, while a living room could be $1,500.

Rates typically start at $800 per room, but it really depends on what the designer includes in that “room package.” Some may offer furniture selection only, while others include layout plans, material sourcing, or styling—all of which affect the final price.

4. Flat-Fee Projects

Some designers offer a flat-fee structure for entire projects.

While this might sound ideal for the client, flat fees come with strict scope limitations. Since the designer needs to do a lot of upfront work to estimate time and resources, any additions or scope changes may result in extra charges.

Many designers avoid flat-fee pricing for this reason, though some still offer it because they know clients like predictability. Just know that flat fees work best for very clear and defined projects.

5. Online Interior Design Packages

Many designers (including myself!) offer online interior design packages, which are a great way to access professional design services at a lower price point.

Online design is flexible and can support you at different stages of your project. Maybe you don’t need help with every single detail—maybe you just need paint suggestions, or a second opinion on your tile choice, or a full design plan for one room.

However, online interior design can also support your larger-scale interior design needs. You might be feeling stuck selecting finishes for a new build, needing help furnishing your entire home, or sourcing furniture for your investment properties. Online interior design offers flexible, accessible, and more affordable solutions—without sacrificing quality.

Online design services can support both small and full-scale projects, including:

  • Full room designs
  • Finish selections (tile, flooring, paint, etc.)
  • Furniture sourcing
  • Answers to your most pressing interior design questions
  • Layout recommendations

In terms of pricing, it varies. But to give you a rough idea:

  • Mini consultations might start around $99 USD
  • Full room design packages can range from $300–$600+
  • In-depth virtual consulting with layered services could cost $1,000+

These services are often customized to your needs, and many designers will work with you hourly to keep things flexible and budget-friendly.

Is Hiring An Interior Designer Worth It?

You might be wondering: is hiring an interior designer really worth it? Well, yes…I’ll admit, I’m a little biased. But here’s how I see it: decorating, furnishing, and renovating are expensive by nature. Even a nice vase can run you $70+, so going into a project without a clear plan, vision, or expert guidance can actually cost you more in the long run. Interior design mistakes are costly. And let’s be honest—interior design mistakes are ugly. You want the money you spend on your space to be well-invested, not wasted. So, I’d say hiring a good, fair interior designer—especially one you can afford—is absolutely worth it.

Interior design pricing can seem overwhelming at first, but the key is to find a designer whose structure and personality work well for you.

Whether it’s hourly, flat fee, or an online package, it’s important to have clarity on what’s included and how your designer will support your vision.

And if you’re just starting out, don’t be afraid to book a discovery call to get a better understanding of what to expect.
