The Top 5 Best AI Tools For Interior Design

Two years ago, I wrote a blog post that would change my career and blog, this post being: The Best and Worst Interior Design AI: A Designer’s Review. That post-where I tested and reviewed all the AI Tools For Interior Design- put me on the blogging map, suddenly I wasn’t just blogging into the ibis. Since then, I’ve consistently written about AI tools for interior design and continually updated my original post, testing nearly EVERY new AI tool to hit the market. After testing them all, I realized it was time to create another roundup—this time narrowing it down to my top 5 picks for the best AI tools for interior design.

In this post, I’ll put these tools to the test, comparing their features and pricing side by side. So if you’ve been wondering which AI tool is worth your time (and money), keep reading.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

How AI in Interior Design Has Advanced Over the Past Two Years

Before we dive into the reviews and my recommendations, I want to highlight some of the major advancements in AI interior design tools—because there have been many, and I expect even more to come.

What AI Interior Design Tools Can Do

AI-powered design tools can now:

  • Generate multiple design ideas
    • AI can quickly produce different interior design concepts and easily switch between various styles.
  • Iterate on designs
    • It can refine and adjust layouts or styles based on simple written prompts.
  • Apply styles from photos
    • AI can take inspiration from an image and apply that style to your space.
  • Create floor plans
    • Many tools generate to-scale floor plans where you can drag and drop furniture to test layouts.
  • Source furniture
    • AI can recommend furniture and decor that matches your chosen design from partnered vendors.
  • Preview finishes
    • You can visualize wallpaper, paint colours, flooring, and other materials directly in your space.
  • Redesign exteriors
    • It’s not limited to interiors—AI can also propose exterior design concepts.
  • Measure and model
    • Some tools measure walls and generate 3D models of your room.
  • Suggest enhancements
    • AI can propose small tweaks to improve or elevate your space.
  • Provide inspiration
    • Quickly delivers fresh design ideas tailored to your preferences.
  • Create photorealistic renders
    • Many platforms now produce high-quality, lifelike images of your finished design.

What AI Interior Design Tools Can’t Do

However, these tools still have limitations:

  • Understand your lifestyle and personal habits
    • AI can generate pretty spaces, but it doesn’t know how you live—whether you need storage for kids’ toys, a durable sofa for pets, or space for entertaining.
  • Account for building codes, regulations, or safety standards
    • It can’t guarantee designs that comply with electrical, plumbing, accessibility, or fire safety codes.
  • Guarantee accurate scale or proportions
    • Many tools still struggle with true-to-life measurements. A layout might look great virtually, but not fit in real life.
  • Assess structural feasibility
    • AI can suggest knocking down a wall without knowing if it’s load-bearing, or placing windows/doors where they can’t actually go.
  • Balance lighting conditions
    • AI doesn’t always account for natural light direction, shadows, or how artificial lighting affects colours and mood.
  • Choose materials based on durability, comfort, or feel
    • It can suggest finishes, but it can’t touch, feel, or test real-world textures and long-term performance.
  • Provide true originality
    • AI generates designs based on patterns it has learned, so it tends to remix existing ideas rather than invent something groundbreaking.
  • Project manage
    • It won’t coordinate with contractors, source materials within your budget/timeline, or manage installation issues.
  • Guarantee cohesion across an entire home
    • AI might create beautiful single rooms, but ensuring flow, consistency, and narrative across multiple spaces still requires human vision.

The Stigma of AI Tools in Interior Design

I also want to touch on the stigma surrounding AI tools in interior design, because as a designer, I have a unique perspective.

Just this past week, I received two very different comments about AI in design. On one of my Instagram posts, someone wrote: “Interior designers will be like website designers… gone with the dodo.” Meanwhile, on Pinterest, another person left the comment: “AI slop.”

So, on one hand, AI is supposedly going to make me obsolete. On the other, it’s “slop” that has no real place in the industry. So… which is it?

A Designer’s Thoughts on AI in Interior Design

Personally, I don’t really get the panic. Designers have been using technology to showcase their ideas for quite some time. For over a decade, interior designers have been creating 3D models in SketchUp, rendering with V-Ray, and spending hours in Photoshop to communicate ideas. AI has simply made that process faster and more efficient.

When it comes to homeowners using AI themselves, here’s my take: people who want to use an app were probably never the type to hire a designer in the first place. Just like some readers use my blog tips to decorate their own homes—while others skip the blog entirely and hire me directly—the market is naturally split.

Working with a designer is a completely different experience than using an app. There’s a need and a market for both. And honestly, I don’t see how AI could replace what I do, because interior design projects are often highly complex.

If you’ve ever managed a renovation or even just chosen finishes for a home, you know how much back-and-forth is involved: planning, iterating, sourcing, comparing, and investigating options. AI can help with some of this, but not most of it.

Is AI In Interior Design a Fad?

Will AI in interior design last, or is all this AI hype just a fad? Honestly, I personally think AI in interior design is here to stay. Do I think it will completely replace the way people furnish, design, and decorate? Not entirely. I believe AI will solidify itself as a valuable tool—at least the best ones will—but I don’t see the whole process being taken over. Interior design is just too complex, because, well… people are complex. I should know—I’m an interior designer who works directly with clients.

Where AI Does Fit In

That said, I do see AI as a useful tool in certain contexts. For simpler projects—say, decorating a bedroom—it can be handy and fun. If someone just wants quick ideas and isn’t too fussed about every detail, AI tools can serve them well.

But when it comes to bigger projects, especially renovations, AI simply doesn’t replace the value of a trained designer. The process is too extensive and nuanced for a one-click solution.

So no—I don’t believe designers are “gone with the dodo.” And I don’t think AI is slop, either. It’s just a tool, one that has its place alongside traditional design work.

Now, with that perspective in mind—let’s dive into the reviews.

The Top 5 Best AI Tools For Interior Design

the case study

Here we go—my updated Top 5 list of the best AI tools for interior design. In this roundup, we’ll compare how each AI transforms the same empty space into a sitting room in a boho style. I’ll break down the standout features of each tool and include a price comparison so you can see which option offers the best value.

1. Planner 5D

AI Tools For Interior Design

Here’s how Planner 5D transformed this space. It’s a lovely design that really nails the style.

Planner 5D is one of my favourite AI tools for interior design because of its dual functionality as both an app and a web application. The app is fantastic, and one of my favourite features is the ability to scale a floor plan easily. For example, if you only have one known measurement, you can upload a floor plan and Planner5D will automatically generate a to-scale version. This is especially helpful when working with floor plans that don’t include all the dimensions—which, in my experience, happens often.

I also think the AI-generated designs look great—very realistic and achievable.

Subscription Pricing:

  • For homeowners: Plans start at $4.99/month, which includes access to the AI designer, smart wizard tools, furniture blocks for space planning, five renders per month, and automatic plan recognition. This makes it an excellent option for average homeowners tackling small projects around the house.
  • For professionals: There’s a $33.33/month plan that offers 4K renders, mood boards, a custom-branded profile to showcase your work, and more.

Planner 5D caters to both casual users and professionals, which is one reason I gravitate toward it so much—it suits my needs while still being enjoyable for most people.

Overall I give Planner 5D a 8.5/10.

2. Home Visualizer

AI Tools For Interior Design

I really like the output of Home Visualizer—I can truly see this space coming to life. It might be my favorite result so far for this boho living room.

Home Visualizer is still on my list of the best AIs in the interior design world because, simply put, the outputs are great. This AI isn’t fussy; it gives you exactly what you ask for and is very reliable. It’s helpful for turning sketches into renders, virtual staging, changing the style of a space, and even upscaling renders. I’ve written a full review on this AI before—if you want to read more, click here.

Subscription pricing: They offer plans from $12, $21, to $75, with the main difference being how many renders you need. If you’re an average homeowner, the $12 plan is solid and should cover your needs. If you’re a professional, you can upgrade to the business plan for up to 5,000 renders a month—that’s crazy! You can also use code DEE15 for 15% off your subscription.

Overall, I rate Home Visualizer 8/10.

3. AIHomeDesign

AIHomeDesign is a very simple no-frills virtual staging tool. I like it because its straight forward, affordable and gives practical design recommendations. The outputs are realistic (you have to pay to get rid of the watermark). It makes the list because of the simplicity, so if you are looking for a tool that can generate virtual stages quickly with no fuss, this is a good one to try.

Subscription pricing:
They work on a credit base system, and the Pro packages start at $19 a month, and go all the way up to $49 a month, depending on the number of generations you’d like. Credits roll over, so I do like that feature as well.

Overall, I give AIHomeDesign a solid 7.5/10.

4. Imagine.Art

AI Tools For Interior Design

I’m putting Imagine.Art on this list because it renders using Google’s Nano Banana, which produces fantastic results, as you can see. What makes this AI different is that it’s not exclusively an interior design tool—it’s an AI that can also generate art, such as videos, product photos, and more (hence the name). However, it’s definitely a great tool for homeowners who want to generate interior design ideas.

Subscription costs:

They have subscription plans starting at $15 and going up to $24, $41, and higher, depending on your needs. They operate on a credit-based system, so I think the average homeowner could get by with the $15 package.

Overall, I give Imagine.Art a solid 8/10.

5. Ohouse AI

I recently discovered the most popular AI home design app in Korea: Ohouse AI. Ohouse AI is a mobile app that does much more than just redesign your space. You can create 3D models, remove and add furniture from a room, clean up photos, generate themed rooms in different styles, and more. This popular AI app is easy to use, and does exactly what you prompt it to do.

Subscription costs: The subscription cost depends on whether you choose yearly access, which comes out to a few dollars per month, or monthly access, which is about $15 per month. They also offer a three-day free trial where you can test all the features.

Overall, I give Ohouse AI a 8.5/10.

The Human Creative Lead Is Still Needed In Interior Design

After trying out all the AI interior design tools, I still argue that human creativity should lead in the interior design industry. Yes, the AI tools on the market are impressive—and as a designer who has tried them all and integrated AI into my workflow, I know firsthand just how capable generative AI already is (and I acknowledge it will only get better). But how can I still claim that real human interior designers remain at the forefront?

Speaking from my own experience working with clients through online interior design (another tech-forward advancement in the space), I’ve found two key things:

  1. AI generative tools work far better when fueled by a designer’s in-depth ideas, rather than left entirely to generate on their own.
  2. AI can be frustrating.

Let me elaborate. Yes, generative AI tools can churn out pretty pictures all day—and that’s great—but interior design and decorating are disciplines grounded in research, planning, and practicality. While creativity is essential, much of what interior designers do goes beyond just aesthetics. The design process involves budgeting, technical details, feasibility, selection constraints, and more. Often, the “fun” creative part is just the cherry on top of a much longer list of deliverables that must be addressed before you can even think about adding decorative elements.

Plus, honestly, AI can be frustrating to work with. Some of the AI interior design tools on the market produce what the kids might call “AI slop.” There’s truth in that—sometimes you prompt an AI to do one thing, and it does something entirely different. AI is far from perfect. But, I hope this list of the top 5 Interior design AI tools was helpful.
