How to Achieve the Cottage Core Aesthetic in your Interior

The cottage core aesthetic has been a fashion trend among the young ones for some time now. So, I thought I’d take a look into the cottage core interior design style, considering the fashion trends often mimic the design trends. The cottage core style offers a nostalgic, romantic, and cozy escape from the modern world. This style celebrates simplicity, nature, and a return to traditional craftsmanship. If you’re looking to bring this charming aesthetic into your home, here are some key elements and tips to help you create a cottage core-inspired interior.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

Believe it or not, I have never been on a cottage trip. Yep, that’s right, I have been on a TONE of trips around the globe (33 countries and counting), but somehow, I have never been on a simple cottage trip. But, it is certainly on my bucket list.

However, plenty of my clients have cottages, and I have worked with them to create the cottage of their dreams. So, I have certainly been inside a cottage or two. And let me say, I find cottages absolutely breathtaking! The smell of pine when you first walk in is just marvellous. I think everyone should look to infuse a little bit of a cottage vibe in their home. So, let’s look at how one can spice up their home with some cottagecore flair.

How to achieve that Cottage Core vibe

1. Embrace Natural Materials

One of the hallmarks of cottage core is the use of natural materials. Incorporate wood, stone, linen, and cotton into your decor. Think exposed wooden beams, rustic wooden furniture, stone fireplaces, and linen curtains. These materials bring warmth and authenticity to your space.

  • Wooden Furniture: Opt for vintage or antique pieces with a worn, rustic finish.
  • Stone Accents: Incorporate stone elements like a fireplace, backsplash, or even stoneware pottery.
  • Textiles: Use natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, and wool for cushions, throws, and curtains.

2. Soft, Muted Color Palette

The cottage core color palette is inspired by nature and typically includes soft, muted tones. Think pastels, creams, soft blues, and earthy greens. These colors create a serene and welcoming environment.

  • Walls: Paint your walls in soft, neutral tones like cream, sage green, or dusty pink.
  • Furniture: Choose furniture in natural wood tones or painted in soft, muted colors.
  • Accessories: Use pastel-coloured cushions, rugs, and throws to add subtle pops of colour.

3. Vintage and Antique Finds

Cottage core celebrates the charm of bygone eras, so incorporating vintage and antique items is essential. Hunt for unique pieces at flea markets, antique shops, or online marketplaces. And, if you know me, you know I love vintage and I love thrifting! Another reason why I love this vibe.

  • Furniture: Look for antique dressers, sideboards, and dining tables with character and history.
  • Decor: Decorate with vintage mirrors, picture frames, and trinkets.
  • Textiles: Incorporate vintage lace doilies, embroidered linens, and old-fashioned quilts.

4. Floral Patterns and Botanicals

Floral patterns are a staple of the cottage core aesthetic. Use them generously in your decor to bring the beauty of the outdoors inside.

  • Wallpaper: Consider using floral wallpaper for an accent wall or a small powder room.
  • Textiles: Add floral patterns through cushions, curtains, and bed linens.
  • Botanicals: Decorate with dried flowers, potted plants, and fresh floral arrangements.

5. Cozy and Inviting Spaces

Cottage core interiors are all about creating cozy, inviting spaces that make you feel at home. Focus on comfort and warmth in your design.

  • Seating: Choose plush, comfortable seating options like overstuffed armchairs and cozy sofas.
  • Lighting: Use soft, ambient lighting with table lamps, fairy lights, and candles to create a warm atmosphere.
  • Accessories: Add layers of comfort with throws, blankets, and plenty of cushions.

6. Handcrafted and DIY Elements

Celebrate craftsmanship and personal touches by incorporating handcrafted and DIY elements into your decor. This can include homemade crafts, upcycled furniture, and artisanal pieces.

  • Craft Projects: Engage in DIY projects like hand-painted signs, knitted blankets, or homemade candles.
  • Artisanal Decor: Support local artisans by purchasing handmade pottery, woven baskets, and other handcrafted items.
  • Personal Touches: Display family heirlooms, handmade quilts, and other sentimental items that add character to your home.

7. Functional Yet Charming

While cottage core is all about aesthetics, it’s also important that your space remains functional. Blend practicality with charm to create a home that is both beautiful and livable.

  • Storage: Use vintage trunks, wooden crates, and woven baskets for stylish storage solutions.
  • Kitchen: Embrace open shelving to display your charming dishware and cookware.
  • Workspaces: Create cozy nooks for reading, writing, or crafting.

Easy, breezy, beautiful…Cottage Core

Achieving the cottage core aesthetic in your interior design is about embracing simplicity, nature, and a touch of nostalgia. By incorporating natural materials, a soft colour palette, vintage finds, floral patterns, cozy elements, handcrafted items, and functional charm, you can create a space that feels like a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whether you live in a city apartment or a countryside home, these tips can help you transform your space into a cozy cottage core haven.

The cottage core interior style is like cottage living: easy, breezy and simple. There’s not much fuss to it, which I love. It’s all about embracing nature and simplicity. There is something so romantic about the cottage core style; maybe it’s the fact that cottages are often remote and private. Very different from city life, which I am currently living. In my old age, I envision myself living in the cottage country of the UK with an old Porsche. Check back to this blog in 30 years to see if I’ve achieved this. 😅
